The model below illustrates the concept of Earth as a closed system. Our atmosphere (represented by the jar) allows sunlight to enter but prevents other substances such as water from escaping. As a result, we are limited to the resources that we currently have inside this system. All of the living processes on Earth occur within this closed system, so a change in one part of the system can have an effect on other parts of the system.
